What Foods Should I Avoid If I Am Diabetic ?

Eating properly balanced meals and snacks is important to people suffering from diabetes. Food is an important tool to control diabetes and stay healthy. Certain food should be avoided, like refined sugar, jam, molasses, fruit sugar, pastries, soft drinks, cream and fried foods.

White sugar and white flour should be reduced drastically as should butter and hydrogenated vegetable oils.

The two food groups that diabetics should avoid are fats and sweets. Avoiding them would ensure a long, healthy life and avoid serious diabetic complications. Fats include salad dressing, oil, cream, cheese, butter, margarine, mayonnaise, avocado, olives, bacon and sweets. Sweets include cakes, pastries, cookies, ice cream, pies and syrups.

Potato chips that are fried in oil contain 150 calories and 10 grams of fat per handful of chips. This translates to over 20,000 calories and more than 1,000 grams of fat in a year. Doughnuts have anywhere between 200 to 300 calories and between 12 and 20 grams of fat per serving. Depending on the health conditions of the person, one needs to be stringent in order to avoid complications and manage the disease effectively.

Eating a balanced meal can help control blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and reduce the risk of health problems caused by diabetes. Sticking to a diet means controlling blood glucose levels. Controlling blood glucose levels means controlling diabetes. And controlling diabetes means the chance to live a longer and fulfilling life.

These days several alternatives are available suitable for diabetics. These include diet coke, diabetic chocolate and ice-creams and sugar-free popsicles, puddings and candy.
