Include plenty of starches in the diet like vegetables, pasta, cereal, grains and breads. Though white bread can be bad, you still want to ensure that there is enough starch in the food. Eating vegetables are extremely important to any diet, diabetic or otherwise. They provide a great source of fiber, minerals and vitamins. Vegetables that are highly recommended are cabbage, spinach, broccoli, green beans, carrots, tomatoes and peppers. Various fruits also provide fiber, minerals and vitamins required for the body. They are also a source of carbohydrate but should be taken in moderation. Depending on the calorie count of the patient, you may include two or four servings of fruits such as apples, bananas, mango, oranges, raising and grapes each day.
Milk is another much needed source of critical elements that a body needs. Fat free sources of milk like yogurt and low fat milk is very good for the body. Meat and dairy products though necessary, should be eaten in moderation. These also include red meats and poultry as well as cheese, cottage cheese, tofu, peanut butter, eggs and fish.
Make sure to avoid or restrict the intake of carbohydrates which include corn syrup, honey, sweets, sugar, white rice, white bread or items that contain fructose, glucose or sucrose.
