Diabetic Weekly Menus

A diabetic diet need not be boring. When to eat, how much to eat and what to eat are critical points to consider. With sensible meal planning a reasonable diet plan can be worked to control blood glucose levels. It need not be unpalatable or uninteresting.

 

Benefits of proper meal planning are:

 

Sticking to practical food choices can make a difference to your blood glucose and insulin levels. Meals need not be bland. The most important consideration is that there should be a mix of carbohydrates, such as grains, fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats.

Each diabetic menu makes sure of adequate carbohydrates to discourage high glucose levels. The calorie totals range from 1200-1500 per day. Snacks should be had at 2 to 3 hour intervals.

Here are some typical suggestions:
 
         Day 1

Breakfast:

A 2 oz. bran muf

Half cup blueberries

1 cup fat- free milk

Snack:

1 small banana

Lunch:

1 small whole wheat pitta

2 oz. breast of turkey

Lettuce and tomato

2 teaspoons mustard

1 orange

1 cup fat – free milk

Snack:

20 almonds

6 oz. low- fat yoghurt

1 cup herbal tea or coffee

Dinner:

A quarter pound of grilled raw shrimp

Three quarter cup whole wheat pasta

Half cup black beans

1 cup steamed broccoli

Day 2

Breakfast:

2 slices whole wheat toast

2 tbs. peanut butter

1 small banana

1 cup tea or coffee

Snack:

1 cup herbal tea

Half cup unsweetened applesauce

2 tablespoons chopped walnuts

Lunch:

2 slices whole wheat bread

3 ozs. lean roast beef

I cup cauliflower

I cup of tea or coffee

Snack:

1 cup herbal tea

Half cup unsweetened applesauce

2 tablespoons chopped walnuts

Dinner

3 ozs. sautéed chicken breast with 1 cup vegetables

1 tbs. olive oil

2/3 cup cooked brown rice

I cup fat – free milk

Day 3

Breakfast:

3/4 cup bran cereal

1 cup strawberries

1 cup fat-free milk

Snack:

12 red or green grapes

Half cup cottage cheese

Lunch:

10 ozs of beef barley soup

1 medium apple

1 cup tea or coffee

Snack:

1/4 cup sunflower seeds

6 ozs low fat yoghurt

Dinner:

6 ozs white fish

2/3 cup whole wheat couscous

Mixed salad

1 cup tea or coffee

These are typical examples that could be followed.
