Bad Food For Diabetics

There is no single diet for diabetics. The diabetes schedule should be based on each one’s individual needs. But the general mantra is to avoid fats and sugars in favor of whole grains, fruit and vegetables. A diet low in saturated fat with controlled blood glucose levels is recommended.

To keep blood sugar levels under control, a balance has to be struck between the intake of carbohydrates, fats and protein. In addition, a 1,500-calorie diabetic diet restricts calories and fats and controls blood sugar levels.

There is a whole array of foods that come under carbohydrates. The latter includes rice and wheat, fruits and vegetables, and table sugar. Carbohydrates, in whatever form takes from 5 minutes to 3 hours to digest. Proteins take 3 to 6 hours to digest and fat 8 or more hours. Hence, different foods have different effects on blood sugar. This explains as to why ice cream, higher in fat, raises blood sugar levels more slowly than potatoes. Have a diet high in fiber and omit processed and concentrated carbohydrates. These foods have a high glycemic index that causes spikes in sugar levels. Sugar and refined carbohydrates are greatly linked to diabetes.

Avoid sugar free foods made for diabetics. Although they may be sugar free, they may contain transfats that are fattening. Many foods have a lot of table sugar and are high in fat and calories. Sugar-free products should be evaluated for total carbohydrate content.

If you have alcohol on an empty stomach, it can make your blood glucose level drop. They could also raise your blood fats. So, alcohol is best restricted.
