Is Diabetes Contagious ?

Diabetes is a disease relating to high levels of glucose in the bloodstream and lack of glucose in the cells where it is required. Glucose is necessary for energy and proper functioning of most organs. Without glucose where required, a host of complications are likely to arise.

Diabetes is a life-term disease with no known cure. It is most definitely not contagious and not infectious.

Diabetes is generally inherited. Children in families with a history of diabetes are more prone to getting it. There is nothing that can stop this genetic trait.

There are two types of diabetes. Type 1, usually from birth, is when the pancreas stops producing insulin altogether. This can be treated with insulin injections or a pump. Type I diabetes is beyond the individual’s control as more than likely it is hereditary.

In type II, the disease generally strikes anyone. But it is more likely to be acquired by those who are overweight and elderly. Here the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. Another situation arises where it produces enough insulin but the body cannot utilize it properly. Type II can be treated with diet, exercise, tablets or insulin.

Whether you have type I or type II, the end result is over supply of undigested glucose in the blood. This opens the door to a host of serious or life threatening complications. Good diabetes control is getting your blood sugar down. Regular physical exercise is a must. Exercise reduces blood cholesterol reducing heart complications. It cuts down stress keeping down the adrenal level which improves diabetes control and management.
