The first advice people give when there is a bird flu outbreak is to avoid eating chicken. This is just a myth as the disease spreads through contact of the human body with the virus contaminated surfaces. |
To avoid contracting the disease, the most important measure is to avoid being infected by the virus by taking some precautions.
Bird Flu Prevention:
While you are traveling, keep away from direct or close contact with people. It is quite important to stay away from people who cough and sneeze. Avoid kissing and also shaking hands. Avoid going to mass gathering and also crowded places like malls, supermarkets, movies, concerts, schools, banks, buses, trains, elevators and if possible, the doctor’s clinic. While traveling in a crowd, make sure you wear a bird flu respirator or mask to protect yourself against airborne viruses which can spread when people talk, cough or sneeze.
If your work environment permits, work from home. Or else, you take your own coffee cups and disposable tissues. While you use the tap or doors, use a disposable tissue while opening. When you have to share equipments, do not forget to use bird flu gloves.
In shopping areas, wear a bird flu mask and do not eat in food outlets and restaurants. Avoid takeaway foods as they may be contaminated with the virus. While handling trolleys or swiping devices for credit and debit cards, use disposable gloves. Avoid sharing cutlery for food.
Wash your hands frequently and cover your eyes with goggles. You can also plug in cotton in your ears to prevent entry of the virus through open passages in your body. Disinfect home with sanitizers.
