Blindness is a curse. It is practically hard to imagine the woes of a person experiencing blindness. A blind person can no longer relate to aspects of life such as color, shape or perspective like normal individuals. |
In simple terms, blindness can be explained as lack or loss of vision. There are several reasons due to which people lose their vision or sight. They can be either congenital or might occur due to any disease or disorder. Some important causes of blindness include diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, Tay-Sachs disease, stroke, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Retinoblastoma, lead poisoning, optic glioma, injury to the eye as a result of accidents, and complications evolving during eye surgery or medications that are used to treat certain diseases.
In most cases, people do not even like the thought of a disabled person living among them. As a result, these individuals tend to suffer with bouts of depression and emotional disturbances. Hence, the numbers of suicide incidents are high among disabled. The best way to console a blind person is to provide proper care. Standard of care for a blind person must be directed towards making the individual self-sufficient without being dependant on anyone, He/she must be trained properly so that they can dress, eat and do all other activities independently. There are many services that provide training and support in this regard. Apart from this, one must regularly consult an ophthalmologist for a frequent eye examination.
In case of situations where individuals are suffering from partial vision loss, this factor is even more important because many forms of vision loss provide a very short amount of time in order to be successfully treated.
