Color Blindness Excluded Jobs

Color blindness is the inability of a person to perceive colors accurately. It is a life-long condition which has no treatment options at all. Therefore, people suffering from color blindness must learn to cope with this inability.

Color blindness is neither a serious disease, nor does it lead to life threatening complications. However, it can very often limit an individual’s participation in certain everyday color-dependent activities, such as selection of the day’s clothes -- matching tie, matching scarf, socks, make-up, shoes, accessories, etc.  Even major decision making can get affected such as the shade of the wall paint, color of your new car, selection of a gift, etc.

However, if a person learns the tricks of coping with this lifelong inability (to differentiate between different color shades), then he can enjoy a more normal kind of life. They can use their common sense to handle everyday crisis arising out of color blindness. For instance, identification of traffic lights is possible by remembering the placement of colors -- red on top, green at the bottom; they can use shapes and sizes to identify objects rather than depending on colors.

However, one major drawback of being color blind is the limited career options available because certain jobs (such as those of an airlines pilot, policeman, photographer, doctor or jobs involving rail and water navigation) exclude color blind people from applying and getting recruited, owing to the great risk associated with these jobs. These jobs require you to make spot decisions based on your perception of the event or situation and one cannot afford to take incorrect decisions based on abnormal color vision. Therefore, color blind people are excluded from these jobs for safety reasons.
