All babies inherit their genes from their parents and in case of Down syndrome, the baby has one chromosome extra that causes physical and cognitive disability in the baby. |
Babies with Down syndrome are found to have abnormal heart beat rate and this can be found out very early in their developmental cycle.
The reason and causes for Down syndrome is till unclear and why it should cause them disability is unknown. Fetal heartbeat rate is regularly monitored in babies when a woman is pregnant. For a Down syndrome baby the heart beat rate is irregular even in the fetus stage.
There is no prevention for Down syndrome because one cannot control the distribution of chromosomes. Kids with Down syndrome often show common symptoms like a flat facial profile and this has been attributed to the cause that the extra chromosome that is included in their gene pattern is causing it. At birth kids with Down syndrome are of average size and their growth rate is also much slower than compared to the growth rate of a normal child.
Infants show low muscle tone, abnormal heart rate and are very floppy. They also show feeding problems and the inability to suck properly. During pregnancy every fetus is expected to reach some milestones right from conception. By the time the mother is 5 months pregnant the fetal growth should have reached a certain size. At this time during scans if the fetal growth is retarded along with an abnormal heart rate which is very low then it is diagnosed as Down syndrome.
