Down Syndrome Normal Life

There are certain federal laws in place that ensure children with Down syndrome can lead a normal life as far as possible.

There are specialized programs and resources that healthcare professionals make available for these children so that they can try and lead normal life as much as possible.

The resources and specialized programs include special educator, social workers, occupational therapists, and speech therapists. In addition, children with Down syndrome are entitled to free public education and all other services to meet their needs. A parent has the choice of putting the child into a normal school where other children do not have disabilities or in a special needs school. The trend today is that most parents enroll their children into normal schools so the children are exposed more to normal lives and settings.

As the child with Down syndrome grows up, the Americans with Disabilities Act is there to protect him when he is ready to make a transition to working life. The Act ensures that any organization with 15 or more employees cannot discriminate against a person who is qualified with regard to hiring, compensation, job training and other terms of employment. Therefore, adults with mild Down syndrome can invariably find jobs if they have the necessary qualifications and training.

However, the children with severe Down syndrome may not be able to lead normal life because of their severe disabilities, both physical and mental. This can limit the opportunities for these children as they grow up. But occupational therapy and other therapies can improve the quality of their lives to a great extent.
