Down syndrome in brief is caused due to the additional chromosome before the baby is born. Because it is a genetic disorder there is no definitive cure for this condition in reality. |
There are treatments available that control the conditions of Down syndrome. A child with Down's syndrome has to go though some standard set of tests and treatment procedures on a regular basis to keep the symptoms under control.
The child has to go through a set of regular check up and screening tests; has to take medications regularly; may require surgery; and is also given a lot of counseling and support.
There are reasons why these people have to go through regular medical check up because people with Down syndrome have an increased risk of several other conditions that can be life threatening. These include conditions like congenital heart disease, problems related to the immune system, leukemia, premature ageing, Alzheimer’s disease which sets in early, seizures, underdeveloped bones among others. Right from a fetal age the growth in a baby with Down's syndrome is below the expectations medically. Their heart beat rate is also observed to be abnormal right from the fetal age.
These people have to be observed closely for any changes in their health pattern and the possible development of a new problem. The ensuing conditions have to be treated immediately because it may affect their life otherwise. The regular visits help them to be on schedule with their health and the counseling helps them to cope with their problem.
