Sclerosis of the liver is also known as cirrhosis. Usually sclerosis of the liver occurs when scar tissue forms in the liver and starts replacing the healthy tissue. This scar tissue formation happens either due to injury or a disease left untreated for a long time. |
When scar tissue forms in the liver, the liver is unable to function normally. It loses its ability to produce protein, fight infections, filter the blood, digest food and store energy. In addition, the scar tissue obstructs the normal flow of blood. Sclerosis of the liver can be fatal if not treated early.
What Causes Sclerosis of the Liver?There are many reasons that can cause sclerosis of the liver. However, the most common causes are listed below:
Sometimes it is quite possible to get sclerosis of the liver even without the above mentioned causes. In order words, doctors may not be able to tell you why you have contracted cirrhosis even after conducting a thorough medical examination.
Once you develop sclerosis of the liver, nothing can be done to remove the scar tissue. However, doctors can give you medication to ensure that further formation of scar tissue does not take place.
