Lyme Disease And Multiple Sclerosis

Lyme disease is an infection caused by bacteria which are transmitted upon tick bites. Lyme disease has many symptoms and people who suffer from this disease display certain neurologic abnormalities.

However, the question that many people want to know is that what the connection is between Lyme disease and multiple sclerosis.

Lyme disease and multiple sclerosis are often confused because of similar symptoms. Based on the symptoms shown by a person suffering from Lyme disease, many doctors misdiagnose the disease as multiple sclerosis and treat the patient accordingly. And people who are diagnosed with multiple sclerosis are worried that they might have been misdiagnosed when in reality they actually have Lyme disease. And they should be worried because Lyme disease, as mentioned earlier, is a bacterial infection that can be cured by antibiotics.

However, researchers reckon that confusing Lyme disease and multiple sclerosis with each other is quite rare. The reason for this is that a study was conducted on 100 people suffering from multiple sclerosis. Their blood was tested for Lyme disease and just one patient was tested positive, which scientist feel is a coincidence.

In addition, scientists opine that regions where the rates of Lyme disease and multiple sclerosis is high, there are bound to some degree of overlap of symptoms but it is highly unlikely that a doctor will diagnose a patient with Lyme disease as having multiple sclerosis. This especially will not happen as Lyme disease is getting a lot of attention of late by the medical fraternity and therefore, it is highly unlikely that even a doctor who has never come across Lyme disease will misdiagnose it for multiple sclerosis.

But on the other hand, it is a fact that some people show no symptoms of multiple sclerosis. And when they get Lyme disease, the disease could be instrumental in bringing forward the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
