Latest Treatment For Bacterial Prostatitis

Prostatitis rarely occurs in men who are less than 30 years of age. However, it seems to be a common condition in men who are older.

Prostatitis is basically the inflammation of the prostate gland and the surrounding tissue and based on this there are three types of prostatitis -- acute bacterial prostatitis, non-bacterial prostatitis and chronic bacterial prostatitis.

However, we will only look at the latest treatment for bacterial prostatitis and this means both acute and chronic.

Latest Treatment for Bacterial Prostatitis:

Acute bacterial prostatitis is not very common and most men suffer from pain and fever. The onset of the infection is sudden and the prostate is invariably tender and swollen. The latest treatment for acute bacterial prostatitis is trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, which is a broad spectrum antibiotic. Doctors usually prescribe 160 mg of trimethoprim and 800 mg of sulfamethoxazole and this has to be taken two times a day.

Even fluoroquinolones are used to tackle acute bacterial prostatitis and common fluoroquinolones are Ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin and norfloxacin. In the United States, only ofloxacin and norfloxacin are approved by the FDA.

In contrast chronic bacterial prostatitis develops over a period of time and it usually happens when the bacteria causing infection are resistant to the treatment or there is a relapse of the infection. Most men who suffer from chronic bacterial prostatitis have usually had an episode of acute bacterial prostatitis.

The latest treatment for chronic bacterial prostatitis is also trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and fluoroquinolones and the treatment can last for around 10 to 12 weeks.
