Type II Osteoporosis Treatment

Treatment of Type II osteoporosis mainly focuses on increasing bone density. Supplements of calcium and vitamin D along with weight bearing exercise are recommended for treatment of Type II osteoporosis.

Type II osteoporosis is commonly referred to as age related or senile osteoporosis. It results when the process of resorption and formation of bone are no longer coordinated, and bone breakdown overcomes bone building. Type II osteoporosis affects women twice as frequently as men and is primarily associated with leg and spinal fractures.

The determining factor for osteoporosis, whether Type I or Type II, is the amount of calcium left in the skeleton. Treatment for Type II osteoporosis focuses on slowing down and stopping further deterioration of bone mass or bone density.

Type II Osteoporosis Treatment:

Treatment mainly focuses on increasing bone density. Doctors prescribe supplements of calcium and vitamin D along with weight bearing exercise for treatment of Type II osteoporosis. The Best way to treat osteoporosis is to take adequate amount of calcium and vitamin D in diet. Daily intake of 1200-1500 mg of calcium through diet or supplement is recommended. But only calcium is not sufficient along with calcium daily intake of 600-800 IU of vitamin D is needed to increase bone mass. Vitamin D is obtained through diet or through the action of ultraviolet rays from the sun on the skin.  Sun exposure for 5 to 10 minutes weekly improves vitamin D status in the body.

Bisphosphonates are a type of drugs used for both prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Lifestyle modifications should also be incorporated into osteoporosis treatment. Exercise is very important for slowing the progression of osteoporosis. Three types of osteoporosis exercise that are beneficial for Type II osteoporosis are: Weight bearing exercise, flexibility exercise and resistance exercise, but before beginning any strenuous exercise you must consult your doctor.
