Rare Brain Degenerative Diseases

Some of rare degenerative brain diseases are Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), Rasmussen’s encephalitis, Creutzfeltd-jakob disease, and Alpers disease and Wilson disease.

The brain that is enclosed within the cranium is the supervisory center of the nervous system in all vertebrates. It is primary centre for the regulation and control of bodily activities.  It also serves as site of emotions, memory, self awareness and thought.

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy:

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP)(or the steele-Richardson-olszewski syndrome) is a rare degenerative disorder that gradually destroys nerve cells in the part of brain that control eye movements, breathing and muscle co-ordination. The loss of nerve cells causes serious and permanent deficits in eye movement, postures and cognitive functions. The palsy effects ability to move the eyes, relax muscles, and control balance. The disease usually develops after 60 years of age and currently no therapy has proven to be effective only clinical diagnosis is possible.

Rasmussen’s Encephalitis:

Rasmussen’s encephalitis also termed as Rasmussens syndrome or chronic focal encephalitis (CFE) is a rare degenerative disease that initially effects only one side of brain. It generally develops in childhood later it progresses and the person suffers from paralysis of one side of body, resulting in blindness in one eye and loss of mental function. If the effected hemisphere is not removed the disease may spread to the brains other hemisphere.

Creutzfeltd-jakob Disease:

Creutzfeltd-jakob disease (CJD) is a rare neurodegenerative fatal disease of brain, characterized by progressive dementia and gradual loss of muscle control that occurs most often in middle age and is caused by slow virus. It is also called as “mad cow disease”.

Alpers’ Disease:

Alpers disease is a progressive neurological degenerative disease that causes progressive degeneration of grey matter in cerebrum. It also affects liver. It occurs mostly in children and infants.
