The American Academy of Dermatology has recommended that people should protect their skin with an appropriate sun protection whenever they are out in the sun. This helps to prevent melanoma to a large extent. However, there are other ways how melanoma can be prevented and these are listed below. |
Avoid tanning -- Lying in the sun is known to cause premature aging and can lead to wrinkles and sagging skin. There is a 1 in 5 chance of developing skin cancer. Use of sun screen is suggested.
Vitamin D -- One should get enough vitamin D from diet and vitamin supplements and not through sun.
Sun screen -- Generous use of sunscreen to all exposed portions of the body is to be followed as a daily routine. It should include ears, nose, neck, hands, and toes. Sunscreen should have a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 and it should be broad spectrum to cover ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B rays. Lip balm is recommended for lips. Sunscreen has to be applied to dry skin 15-30 minutes before going outdoors and need to be applied every two hours. Sunscreen has to be applied after being in water or sweating.
Protective clothing -- Protective clothing such as long sleeved shirt, pants and broad rimmed hat and sun glasses are required to be worn to protect the skin from the harmful rays of the sun.
Use of shade -- One should utilize the shade wherever possible.
Extra caution -- Extra caution needs to be exercised near water, snow and sand as they can reflect harmful rays of the sun and increases the possibility of sun burn.
UV rays from the sun are known to weaken the body’s ability to protect itself from cancer and other diseases.
