Stomach Cancer Surgery Complications

Surgery for stomach cancer patients would involve removing the part that is cancerous or removing the whole stomach. The surgery also depends at what stage of cancer the patient is and how much the tumor has taken over.

In stomach cancer the unfortunate part is that only a stomach surgery has proven to be the most effective form of treatment because other kinds of treatments like radiation therapy and chemotherapy can have a detrimental effect on other organs present in the abdomen region.

That is why a surgery to treat stomach cancer is considered to be the most effective and realistic form of treatment. Also if the patient who has been diagnosed with cancer is either in stage 0 or stage 1 to stage 3, the first attempt made to cure the disease is surgery. In stage 4 typically the cancer would have spread in many other parts of the body and in case if it has not spread to that extent a surgery could be attempted.

A surgery in cases where the cancer is wide spread still benefits the patient because it prevents the tumor from bleeding and also by preventing the tumor from blocking the stomach and growing too big. Often this type of surgery is referred to as a palliative surgery because the cause of this type of surgery is not to cure the cancer but to prevent the symptoms that can arise in advanced stages of cancer. The risks of surgery are the least in cancer patients compared to any other kind of treatment.
