Feline Gastric Cancer

It is very difficult to diagnose stomach cancer in cats and perhaps is one of the most secretive diseases in the feline breeds. The symptoms of the disease never exist until the disease has advanced to a terminal stage or the cat no longer can hide its discomfort.

However, feline gastric cancer cases among cats are much lower as compared to the other kinds of cancer found in cats.

It is difficult to diagnose the symptoms even when they are noticeable in cats because they coincide with the normal symptoms when the cat is a bit sick or also with the very nature of the cat. The most noticeable symptoms of gastric cancer in cats are laziness, hiding away and not being seen as usual, dehydration, vomiting that has blood in it, black stools, severe anemia, and a complete lack of appetite.

Gastric cancer in cats can be found by stomach examination and when you feel the stomach if you feel the presence of some lumps then it could be gastric cancer. When you suspect something like this with your cat then the immediate diagnosis a doctor would follow is to observe the symptoms in the cat and based on the findings a further ultrasound of the abdomen could be requested. A gastroscopy is also performed sometimes which involves giving anesthesia to the animal and an endoscope is passed into the stomach to observe the presence of tumors. Also through this procedure sample cells for further examination can be taken to study the disease.
