Hair loss is a fact of chemotherapy treatment and nearly all cancer patients suffer from hair loss. |
Some patients experience hair loss from chemotherapy after the first cycle of treatment but most will usually experience it after the second cycle of chemotherapy. However, doctors still do not know a way to prevent hair loss from chemotherapy. A lot of research is being done and it will be some time before a solution is found.
What causes hair loss from chemotherapy? The answer is one that all chemotherapy patients are eager to know and understand. Chemotherapy is used to destroy the rapidly dividing cancer cells and tissues. However, that is not the only thing chemotherapy damages. It tends to damage healthy and normal cells in the body, especially those that divide. The cells, that are the hair follicles, are responsible for hair growth and they are the ones that divide. They get damaged during chemotherapy and this leads to hair loss.
Hair loss from chemotherapy is not just restricted to the hair on the head. Even eye lashes, eye brows and pubic hair can fall out. The fact of the matter is that the amount of drug and the type of drug actually determines whether you will suffer from hair loss or just thinning of the hair. If you are unfortunate enough to have hair loss, you should know that the loss can start all of a sudden or gradually. Usually hair starts falling out in clumps.
The good news is that the hair loss from chemotherapy is not permanent. The hair will start growing back after three to six months after completion of chemotherapy. However, you should be prepared to have different color and texture for the new hair that come out.
