Taxol is a chemotherapy drug that is given different types of cancer like that of the breast, ovary, lung, bladder, prostrate and esophagus. It is also the preferred drug to treat Kaposi's sarcoma. There is no pill form of the drug and that is why Taxol is always given intravenously. |
However, it has been noticed that there is a certain amount of toxicity and side effects associated with Taxol. For example, it has been known to cause irritation of the vein through which it is given. In addition, it can be toxic if it comes out of the vein. It causes tissue damage. Therefore, anyone who is injecting Taxol into the vein of a patient has to be highly trained to do so.
Some people experience certain allergic reactions to this drug. That is why it always advisable to ask your doctor for antihistamine to counter any allergic reaction if you should get one.
One thing is for sure that the toxicity and side effects of Taxol disappear once the chemotherapy treatment is completed. And, invariably the doctors are able t predict when the side effects will occur and for how long. But the severity of the toxicity and side effects depends on the amount of drug given and how often it is given.
