Long Term After Effects Of Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy has side effects. There can be long term after effects of chemotherapy or short term. Sometimes it is quite easy to confuse the effects of the drugs given for chemotherapy as symptoms of cancer. Different drugs have different after effects and it is in your best interest to have knowledge about this.

Chemotherapy affects and damages all the cells in the body that divide besides killing the cancer cells. The most after effects of chemotherapy are seen on the cells of the mouth, intestines, skin, hair and bone marrow. Chemotherapy also has effect on hair because the hair cells are constantly dividing and that is what makes our hair grow. Chemotherapy can cause hair loss. You will also get blisters and ulcers in the mouth and intestines as the lining of the mouth and intestines are affected by chemotherapy.

However, it is important to know that not everyone experiences after effects from chemotherapy. There are certain cancer patients who do not experience any side effects, some patients experience few of them, while others experience all the after effects of chemotherapy.

Usually the long term effects of chemotherapy are dependent on many factors. Some of them are the patient's overall health, the duration that the drug is given, the amount of drug given, method by which the chemotherapy drug is given and whether the patient is given one or a combination of drugs. However, there are very few long term effects of chemotherapy as most of them are short term and go away as the treatment finishes.
