A voice is called "disordered" when the usual vocal quality of a person is altered or changed. The voice usually sounds abnormal and the listener may not identify with it. The development of such disorders can be set off suddenly or it can also be a slow deterioration. |
Examples of characteristics of the sudden onset may actually be a trauma, an infection, any type of injurious inhalation, intubations, and even a severe allergic reaction. There are several causes which are lesser known like degenerative neurological diseases, musculo-skeletal tension, or vocal abuse and misuse of the vocal cords.
All of the disorders do not necessarily have known causes, and some may even occur as a sheer result of the numerous etiologies. Very few of the disorders can be attributed to a known cause and conditions. It is a very important thing to classify the existing disorders and divide them into two major categories such as Functional Voice Disorders and Organic Voice Disorders. Each of which may contain several subcategories. It should also be noted that some of the disorders may appear in both the categories as a main result of multiple etiologies.
The functional disorders can include all the disorders that are a result of the physical changes. Neurological voice disorders can be triggered due to trauma or conditions like stroke for example. However, there are rehabilitation therapies which help to improve the voice conditions in case of neurological disorders caused due to stroke and trauma. Also in case of such incidents, a person loses control over the voice muscles but not the vocal cords.
