| Condoms are the most convenient and effective way of getting protection from acquiring sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS. |
There are different varieties of condoms that are currently available in the market. Choosing the right kind of condom is important so as to ensure effective protection.
Depending on the manufacturing material, condoms are primarily two types that include latex and polyurethane. Latex condoms are more reliable than polyurethane since they are more stretchable. However, latex condoms can be used only with water-based lubricants. Polyurethane condoms are used by people who are allergic to latex. These condoms are less flexible, thinner and more expensive in comparison to latex condoms. These condoms can be used with both oil-based and water-based lubricants.
Another type of classification of condoms is based on lubrication. Some condoms have a thin layer of lubrication present over them. Condoms not having any such layer are referred to as “dry”. Lubricated condoms are better than dry condoms because they are easy to use, comfortable, provide a better sensuous feeling and avoid friction during a vaginal or anal intercourse. However, dry condoms are preferred during an oral sex because lubricated condoms do not taste good.
Next classification is based on spermicide present on the condoms. Certain lubricated condoms contain a spermicide called Nonoxynol 9 that can reduce the risk of pregnancy. One should be careful while using such condoms. This is because some people are allergic to Nonoxynol 9 resulting in the formation of little sores on the skin of the penis. Excessive usage of Nonoxynol 9 containing condoms in a day causes irritation in and around the vulva, vagina, and the rectum, thus increasing the chances of getting an infection.
