Hpv Causes Vaginal Infections
Vagina is an integral part of female reproductive system. However, it is also the first organ to be affected during any type of genital infections. The vagina normally contains several species of bacteria and other microorganisms.

These bacteria are similar to those that are commonly observed on the skin or in the gastrointestinal tract. Most common among these are Lactobacillus members that feed on the carbohydrates present in the vaginal discharge and lead to production of lactic acid. As a result, pH around the vagina drops to around 4.5, which results in elimination of pathogenic microorganisms from the vaginal mucosa. Vaginal infections occur when the balanced environment in the vagina gets disturbed as a result of medications such as antibiotics, hormonal changes, contraceptives, sexual intercourse or stress.

Vaginal infections or vaginitis can be described as an inflammation of the vagina caused due to an infection with a pathogen like bacteria, virus, fungus or yeast. Vaginitis is characterized by an abnormal vaginal discharge that is thick and white and emits foul smell. Other symptoms include irritation, itching, soreness, pain during intercourse, swelling, blisters, lumps and abdominal pain.

The most significant vaginal infections include thrush, bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes and genital warts. Among these, genital warts are caused due to infection with human papilloma virus or HPV. There are more than 100 different types of HPV subtypes. Among these 30 percent are capable of causing a genital infection. The remaining 70 percent cause an external infection on the skin. Transmission of HPV occurs due to direct skin contact that occurs during sex. Infection caused by HPV results in the formation of flesh-colored lump like structures in and around the genital organs. These lumps either exist as single or in the form of clusters.
