Root Canal Post Op Pain Treatment

Sometimes pain may continue after a root canal procedure. This usually disappears within a few days, or weeks at the very most. A thumb rule whether to expect pain after treatment is the degree of pain experienced before it. If acute pain was encountered before treatment, then some pain may be expected after it.

The treated tooth may be sensitive to biting pressure or appear to be loose. Sometimes a blister or pimple may appear on the gum which will disappear. The area of the gum around the tooth might be inflamed or infected.

Here are some suggestions to cope with post-op pain and minimize it:

Avoid chewing or eating on the treated side.
Apply an ice pack to the treated area and continue to do so for a few hours after the anesthetic effect has worn off.
Try to sleep with the head in an elevated position.
Avoid hard and extreme hot and cold foods for a few days.
Take a pain-killer like ibuprofen an hour after the procedure, and thereafter as recommended by your dentist.
Continue with the prescribed medication and antibiotics. The full course of antibiotics must be taken to ensure that no post operative infection takes place.
Till the crown is put in place, chew on the opposite side.
Refrain from smoking for a day and reduce smoking after that.
Avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
Avoid hard or crunchy foods that might fracture the crown.
For the next 2 days rinse frequently with salt water.
