This means teaching them not only how to clean them but also how to protect them from harmful foods that can cause decay. Tooth decay is preventable. Forming good habits at a young age can help the child preserve healthy teeth for life.

First grade children should be taught the following:

• Brush twice a day with a smear of toothpaste, first thing in the morning and last thing before bed at night.
• Use a toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles.
• Spit the toothpaste out, don’t eat or swallow.
• Rinse after brushing.
• Clean the teeth, gums and tongue every morning and night.
• Every child should have his or her own toothbrush and should not use anybody else's.
• Toothbrushes should be stored in a clean, dry, airy place so that they can dry out between uses. Toothbrushes should be stored separately so they do not touch one another.
• Rinse the toothbrush thoroughly under fast-running water to remove all traces of toothpaste, plaque and bits of food. Then to help drying, shake off the excess water from the toothbrush.
• Change toothbrushes regularly, when the bristles become splayed or clogged with toothpaste.
• Use a new toothbrush after suffering from illnesses like colds and flu or after mouth infections.
• Wash hands after going to the toilet and wash if the toothbrush falls on the floor or touches the hand basin.
