A condom is a positive aid to contraception. Positive in this case means that it acts as a physical barrier to keep the sperm away from the egg and thus prevents the egg from being fertilized. A condom also offers protection from transmission of sexual disease, more especially against HIV, which is rampant these days. A condom is intended for single use only. |
Condoms are available to suit both male and female. The female condom is a sheath that is inserted into the vagina and is closed at one end. It could be clumsy to use and is hence not very popular. The female condom is generally coated with a film of spermicide.
The male condom is the most popular methods of male contraception. It is a sheath that fits around the erect penis and is closed at one end with the other end terminating at the joint of the penis and the body. The closed end sometimes has a reservoir to collect semen after ejaculation.
Condoms are made of polyurethane and latex rubber. The former are thinner and more sensitive but are also stiffer and more expensive. The most commonly used are those made of latex rubber. These are generally lubricated and some might have a layer of spermicide. In addition, the condom may be further lubricated if necessary.
Whether male or female condoms are used, care has to be taken to ensure they are not ruptured or damaged in handling while putting them on or removing them. If this happens the purpose is lost.
Different manufacturers offer an array of condoms in a variety of colors, flavors and shapes ostensibly to heighten pleasure. They are all equally good and safe but the ultimate preference lies with the user. The essence of a suitable condom is to use one of a comfortable fit. Manufacturers have evolved a standard size that fits most men but special sizes are also available.
In order to choose the safest and best condom, you may have to try many to zero in on one. However, generally all condoms, if they fit correctly, are the safest and best.
