The female condom is made of polyurethane or nitrile. It is a thin sheath or pouch used by a woman during sexual intercourse. The female condom serves two purposes -- to prevent semen from entering the vagina leading to an unwanted pregnancy and to protect against sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. |
The female condom is a lubricated sheath ending in two rings. One side, intended for insertion is closed. The ring at the other end is intended to remain outside the vulva. It acts as a guide to the penis and to prevent the sheath from collapsing inside.
Utmost care should be exercised when removing the condom to ensure it is undamaged. The female condom is intended to be inserted. Here is how to put on a female condom. This is best done while squatting, with one leg raised, or while lying down. Hold the sheath with the open end hanging down, squeeze the inner ring between thumb and middle finger and insert gently into the vaginal opening. Push the inner ring as far as it will go using the index finger ensuring the outer ring remains outside and that the sheath remains straight and untwisted.
Guide the erect penis carefully into the sheath. If during intercourse the condom slips and enters the vagina, cease immediately and remove the condom.
To remove, twist the outer ring of the condom and pull it out gently making sure the semen remains within. Like the male equivalent, the female condom is also intended for single use.
The female condom is pre-lubricated but additional lubricant can always be smeared before insertion. The idea is it should remain in place inside the vagina throughout intercourse.
