As the Yoga spread from teacher to student the concept of individual system of thought began to take shape. The path to spiritual freedom is through devotion with a keen mind and sacrifice of the ego. This is considered as the Yogic path. The Yoga sutras by Patanjali are around 100-200 AD. Here Yoga is presented in a systematic way. This is an important resource to understand Yoga. Patanjali’s thinking conveys that every individual consists of two parts -- matter and soul. The purpose of Yoga is to free the soul from the material world.
Subsequently, Yoga has taken a different turn where in different exercises have been developed associated with deep breathing and meditation. This is known to help the body to continue to remain young and prolong life. This has created Hatha Yoga and other branches. Yoga in the form of Hatha Yoga has become popular in the west purely as a physical exercise and separated from its original purpose. Even though many do not practice Yoga in totality, they do follow certain practices and beliefs based on Yoga.
Yoga has gained popularity in the west and it is rapidly growing as a health movement as people are seeking solutions for their everyday problems.
