Chewing tobacco is an addictive habit and the main ingredient in tobacco which causes this addiction is nicotine. |
Due to this addiction, it becomes very difficult for a user to actually stop using tobacco and when they try to do so they may experience the same kind of symptoms as one can experience while one tries to quit smoking, such as increased appetite, depression and/or irritability.
Chewing of tobacco can lead to minor things like early eroding and decay of teeth, bad breath, discoloring of lips, sore throat, rashes and it can also lead to serious problems like lung cancer, heart problems etc. Due to constant chewing of tobacco the teeth gets permanently discolored and the users may have a condition called halitosis which means they would have constant bad breath.
One of the most important problems associated with tobacco chewers is oral cancer. The people who chew tobacco are at a high risk of getting oral cancer, almost 50 times higher than non tobacco users. Tobacco chewing affects the tongue, the area below the tongue, the cheeks, the throat etc. Some people may also develop small white patches in their mouth called leukoplakia which can later develop into cancer. These patches however will usually disappear after a few weeks or few months of stopping the usage of tobacco.
Apart from this, chewing tobacco can also lead to heart problems and high blood pressure. Such people also tend to have higher cholesterol levels, thus increasing the risk of heart attacks.
Thus, it is very important to spread the message that even chewing tobacco can lead to life threatening diseases.
