Malpratice Tips For Doctor
There are various ways that doctors can avoid a malpractice suit. Your relationship with your patient pays a big role in this. Try to be more attentive and develop open communication with your patient. This will help in forming trust. Patients are much more likely to sue an impersonal physician than one with whom they have developed a good rapport.
Give personal attention to your patients as much as possible. Introduce yourself to your patient. Explain them the diagnosis and treatment plan. Try to appear understanding and compassionate. Don’t be in a hurry when examining. Take your time and make sure you have all the facts. Avoid using technical language with your patients. Never give guarantees that the treatment will definitely cure the patient.
Health care professionals have a duty to disclose all facts to a patient or his family. Any adverse events should be definitely told to the relatives of the patient. This will help in avoiding a malpractice suit later on.
Create a medical record of any adverse event. This will aid in investigation in case of any legal action. Note down any diagnostic tests, treatments and follow up action. At the same time, fill out an incident report. This report should be made available to the Legal Department of your hospital. The report should be objective, containing a clear description of what happened.
Withholding information from a patient is practiced in very rare cases of “therapeutic privilege”. The physician truly must feel that the patient's health would be adversely affected by hearing the truth.
